Frequently asked

Everything you need to know about Trace.

The Basics
What is Trace?
Trace is an iOS app that helps you remember everyone you meet. When you save a contact, Trace automatically captures the date, time, and location. If you're at a named event, all contacts are grouped under that event. Think of it as a memory layer for your contacts.
How is Trace different from Apple Contacts?
Apple Contacts stores names and numbers. Trace adds context — when you met, where you were, what event you were at, and your personal notes about the encounter. Trace syncs to Apple Contacts automatically, so every person you save appears in your phone's address book.
How much does Trace cost?
Trace is free to download. The full experience is $3.99 per month at our introductory price. For organizations with 200+ licenses, we offer enterprise pricing at just $20 per license per year. No ads, ever.
What iOS version do I need?
iOS 17 or later. iPhone only.
Features
What's an Event Session?
A named event like "Tech Summit 2026" or "Team Offsite." When you start an event, every contact you add is automatically grouped under it. Later, you can browse contacts by event, message the entire group, or write notes about the event itself.
How do I add a contact?
Tap "New Contact" from the home screen. Enter their name, phone or email, optionally snap a photo, confirm the details (time and location are captured automatically), and save. The whole flow takes about five seconds.
Can I message everyone from an event at once?
Yes. When an event has two or more contacts with phone numbers, a "Message Group" button appears. One tap opens Messages with everyone pre-loaded as recipients. No copy-paste required.
How does the QR code work?
Your personal card is encoded as a standard vCard QR code. Anyone can scan it with their phone camera — no app required. They'll see your name, phone/email, and title, and can add you to their contacts instantly. You can also share via AirDrop or any share sheet.
Can I add a photo of someone I meet?
Yes. During the capture flow, you can take a photo with your camera or choose from your library. Photos are synced to Apple Contacts as well.
What are private notes?
Personal reminders you attach to contacts — how you met, what you discussed, what to follow up on. Notes are only visible to you and are fully searchable in History. You can also write event-level notes with rich text formatting.
Can I schedule follow-up reminders?
Yes. After saving a contact, you can schedule a local notification for any date and time. Customize the default message template in Settings — use [name] as a placeholder.
Does Trace support WhatsApp?
Yes. If WhatsApp is installed, Trace adds it as a messaging option alongside iMessage and Email. Swipe on any contact row to choose your preferred platform.
Can I edit contacts after saving?
Yes. Tap any contact in History to see their full profile. Tap Edit to change name, phone, email, title, or note. Changes sync back to Apple Contacts.
Privacy & Data
Does Trace collect my data?
No. Trace is 100% local. There are no servers, no analytics, no third-party SDKs, and no internet connection. Your data never leaves your device. We literally cannot see your contacts.
Do I need an account?
No. Open the app, set up your card, start using it. No email, no password, no sign-up.
Does Trace work offline?
Completely. Every feature works without internet. Trace makes zero network requests. It works in airplane mode.
Where is my data stored?
Locally on your iPhone using Apple SwiftData. If you grant Contacts permission, saved people also appear in your Apple address book (which may sync via iCloud, depending on your device settings).
What happens if I delete the app?
All Trace data is removed from your device. Contacts saved to your Apple address book remain in Contacts unless you delete them separately.
Permissions
What permissions does Trace request?
Location (to record where you met someone), Contacts (to save to Apple address book), and Camera (to add a photo). All are optional — Trace works fully without any permissions enabled.
I denied a permission. Can I change it?
Yes. Open your iPhone's Settings app, scroll to Trace, and toggle any permission on. You can also check permission status from within Trace's Settings screen.
